Sweater vests had a major comeback last spring, and they won’t be going anywhere this fall. Tis the season for that unpredictable and crazy weather – you know that “freezing in the morning but smoldering at lunchtime” feeling? Sweater vests can be the perfect solution for those iffy days when layering is your best friend.
Celebrities and influencers have been all over social media sporting this throwback trend and there’s no reason you can’t achieve this cool, retro look too. With styles ranging from 90’s grunge to delicate feminine to preppy collegiate, there’s a style out there that can easily fit into anyone’s wardrobe. And they’re actually easier to style than you may think.
Here’s some style inspiration:
On my recent trip to Target I came across this great sweater vest that was not only the perfect color and shape, but also a great price. It’s a no-brainer; this went into my cart immediately.

So I channeled the one person who has mastered the sweater vest better than anyone (Harry Styles of course) and rummaged through my own closet to come up with different outfit ideas.
Here’s 3 ways I styled this vest using pieces I already owned.
Look 1: A classic fall pairing. Style your sweater vest over a staple wardrobe piece – the white Oxford shirt. Adding denim in an updated fit and color will help keep the outfit looking young and fresh. (This outfit would also look great with a pair of denim flares!) Finish it off with some booties and a felt hat for an instant autumn-ready look.

Look 2: Over a Dress. One of my favorite things to wear in my wardrobe is a dress. They are literally the easiest thing to throw on and some days I just can’t be bothered to do much more than that.
So why not transition our trouble-free dresses into the fall by layering them under a sweater vest! Tie a belt around your waist for definition and add some cute heels for a pulled-together yet super easy look.

Look 3: Crop it! I loved the idea of wearing this vest with a nice pair of wide-leg trousers and I just bought the perfect pair. Adding strappy sandals and a fun hair bow made the outfit both dressed-up and relaxed at the same time.
Styling tip: If tucking the vest into your trousers is causing too much unwanted bulkiness at your waist, try folding it under and tucking the hem into your bra. I know it sounds uncomfortable, but I promise it’s not. This is how I achieved this look!
